Many members attend the Ad Astra convention in Toronto, with GoHs Connie Willis, David Hartwell, Rick Green, and Urban Tapestry (Allison Durno, Debbie Ohi and Jody Krangle). The Toastmaster is Rob Sawyer.

Attendees of the Open Meeting are greatly amazed and mightily entertained as The Stupendous Not-Remotely-Chinese Sujoy Gupta introduces his audience to the glorious world of SF and fantasy as seen through the prism of spoken and written Mandarin. (Sujoy had recently spent a year teaching English in Taiwan...)

A number of members who are fans of the TV show Nikita attend the Close Quarters Standby convention in Richmond Hill, Ontario.

Author and marine biologist Peter Watts combines the questions "Can authors write about the near future without getting stale-dated" and "Can authors write about the far future and remain comprehensible?" into the lecture topic "Three reasons why it sucks to be a science fiction writer and one reason why it maybe doesn't." (The e-mail interview he did a few weeks before the meeting can be found here.)

Toronto Trek convention at the Regal Constellation Hotel, Toronto. Media guests include Andreas Katsulas, Armin Shimerman, Robert Trebor, Tim Choate and Michelle Nolden. The revamped Voyageur, redesigned by club member and former Voyageur Editor Sharon Lowachee and containing a new section with fiction, is launched at the club's room party in the hotel.

Some members attend the Worldcon, Millennium Philcon, in Philadelphia. Authors George R.R. Martin (who will also be the author GOH at the Toronto Worldcon in 2003, Torcon) and Greg Bear are interviewed.

The "Who Wants to Be Emperor of the Universe?" game furnishes many contenders for the throne. Crowned Emperor is Sujoy Gupta―He Who Amazed at the May 12 meeting.

Some members attend the World Fantasy Convention in Montreal. Authors Guy Gavriel Kay and Charles de Lint are interviewed.

The
Primedia convention, held at the Toronto Airport Days Hotel, is entitled Conthulhu: A Tribute to H.P. Lovecraft, Horror & Fantasy. Unfortunately, both the media guests (Harry Groener of Buffy and Andy Hallett of Angel) cancel, leading to a smaller-than-expected turnout. The panels are a lot of fun.
